Reproduced Bayonet Frog and Scabbard

Video

Beaver News #69 – March 26, 2018

First, Thank You to all of you who came out last weekend to visit our booth at the 2-Day HACS Show. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the show, check out two photos at the end of this newsletter to get an impression.

Now to this week’s video:

If you have a particular item that is old or very beat up and you would like to have it restored we might be able to do that for you. Not everything can be restored as you will see in this video, but if that’s the case we can reproduce it for you.

We had a client bringing in a bayonet from 1905 with the original frog and scabbard. Unfortunately, we could not restore the original piece, the leather was very deteriorated, broke up and falling apart. But we could use the hardware from the original and reproduce a new frog and scabbard.

You Dream It – We Make It.
and we sure loved to make this clients dream come true.

If you have heirlooms or collectables that you would love to display or even reuse again in reenacting just give us a shout and we let you know if we can restore or reproduce it.

Check out this weeks video

And here as promised two photos from our booth at the 2-day HACS Show last weekend:

Doc Holliday Style Shoulder Rig

Video

Beaver News #67 – February 19, 2018

A client wanted to have a shoulder rig similar to the one that Doc Holliday made famous.

In Cowboy Action it’s not uncommon that we take on a persona, dress like that historic person and want to have the accessories that person had and made famous.

Who was Doc Holliday?
A dentist by trade, John Henry “Doc” Holliday (1851-1887) was a gunman and gambler and became a folk hero of the American West as the close friend of fellow gunslinger Wyatt Earp. Together they were the famous faces at the legendary battle of the West, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

As you know, our motto is

You Dream it – We Make it!

If you have a hero in history or a hero from a movie (like this one we did last fall), let us know, we love making your dreams come true.

So check out this weeks video of the Doc Holliday Style Shoulder Rig that Mark made for this client.

Custom Gun Belt & Holster on drop-loop

Video

Beaver News #60 – September 25, 2017

Today we are talking again about a custom item: this is a gun belt with a holster that we just manufactured for one of our customers.

He wanted a 1-3/4″ belt and he wanted to have a drop-loop on it to put on the holster for his revolver. As a prospector, he goes into the woods a lot and he has a license to carry. He wanted something that is versatile and that fits his .357 magnum

Also, because he carries different equipment on his belt he found that if the belt buckle is on the left side, where it normally is on a man’s belt, it has gotten in the way of his equipment. So we manufactured the belt to his desire and put the buckle on the right side. Watch the video to see the other features on this custom rig.

Beaver News #58 – August 28, 2017

Here at Beaver Mountain Works we are getting ready for hunting season. We are starting to manufacture our quivers for archery and we thought, why not let you have a peek 🙂

This particular one will go on the hip and you can see how Mark takes a simple piece of leather and transforms it into a tapered tubular.

To do that he first has to punch holes on all four sides (did you see our tutorial on how to punch holes? If not, you can watch it here).

After punching the holes he is ready to stitch it together. Best is to start at the narrow end and work your way to the wider end, it’s easier to get your hand in there this way.

Watch him stitch it together and hear all the priceless tips he gives you while he is doing it.

Beaver News #52 – May 8, 2017

People have asked us “how do I move the leg ties on my Mare’s Leg Holster”? So we thought we make a short video about it since there is a little trick to it.

Don’t own a Mare’s Leg Holster yet?
Order yours here, you can choose between six different styles.

When you receive your hand-made, high-quality Mare’s Leg Holster from us, the leg ties are on the middle setting of the 5-holes, but you might need it higher or lower.

So how do you move them up or down?

This is what Mark explains in this short video. First Mark shows you how to figure out in what hole your leg ties should be and then how to move them there.

What you will need:

  • pliers
  • a basic paper clip
  • and a little bit of patience

Watch the video below and let Mark show you how to do it:

Mark carving the Grizz – part 2

    Video

    Beaver News #51 – April 24, 2017

This is part 2 of our behind-the-scenes video that gives you a glimpse into how Mark carves the Grizzly that is featured on our Mare’s Leg Rig “Grizz“.

If you missed part 1, watch it here. You’ll get to see how Mark does all the basics, the carving, the pressing and the relief and bringing the animal out by accenting the edges, like a 3D effect.

Now in part 2 you’ll see him work on the hair. It’s a long process, as Mark mentiones, Grizzlies are quite hairy fellas :-). The longer he works on it the more you’ll see the Grizzly really coming to life, at one point it even seems to attack you through the screen….

The next step is dying and don’t you startle at first when you see him applying the dye all over this beautiful carving? But then, all cleaned up and waxed, you’ll see how amazing it looks and at the end of the video you’ll see the hole rig all put together.

Click ont he image below to watch this majestic animal come to life.

Mark carving the Grizz – part 1

    Video

    Beaver News #50 – April 10, 2017

This is a behind-the-scenes video that gives you a glimpse into how Mark carves the Grizzly that is featured on our Mare’s Leg Rig “Grizz“. It’s a two part series and this is part 1.

We jump in right after Mark has traced the outlines onto the leather and used the swivel knife to cut the outline out. Now he shows you how he does the carving, the pressing and the relief, this is still all the basics, as you will see.

Then he is bringing the carving out by accenting the edges, like a 3D effect. For that he uses a stamping tool, and the object is to using pressure, pushing down and smoothing it out at the same time, but the leather has to have just the right dampness for that.

When he makes the hair, and highlights the hair, the carving is going to stand out like the animal is charging you with the hair all up in hackles.

Every one of our carvings, even though there are similarities, is unique, just like every animal or every person is unique. There is not two that are identical.
